Chiropractic Adjustment

What is a Chiropractic Adjustment?facet-joint

Also referred to as spinal manipulation, an adjustment is the safe and effective application of a high velocity and low amplitude force to the joints of the spine which have restricted motion in them wherein they don’t move optimally. The effect of this is an increased mobility of the spinal joints which allows for proper disc nutrition and reduced nerve root pathway interference. It also alleviates pressure on the joints which leads to a reduction in inflammation / nerve irritation within the joint, thus relieving pain. This is quite similar to “cracking your knuckles” where the “cracking” is simply gas being released from the joint in an equalization of pressure inside the joint to that outside of it. There are no actual bones cracking and very minimal movement occurs at the spinal joints, but the relief is often instant!

The adjustment is only one tool in the tool belt, though it is a powerful one. Other modalities such as acupuncture, soft tissue mobilization / fascial release (aka Active Release Technique), exercises, and nutrition/supplementation, to name a few, are used in many combinations, depending on the patient’s need(s).
