Chiropractic Myths and Misconceptions

There are a number of chiropractic myths and misconceptions which I come across on a daily basis. I would like to shed some light on the truth and dispel these fallacies.

1. Chiropractic adjustments hurt – adjustments are painless and help alleviate pain instantly in most cases. Often the discomfort some patients may feel are due to the patients not relaxing fully and creating muscle tension. Other times it may be the tension of the muscle that lingers if not addressed with soft tissue treatment during the visit. This mild discomfort resolves itself usually within 12 hours.

2. Once I see a chiropractor I have to go back for life – ABSOLUTELY NOT! Patients are educated on the benefits of a healthy lifestyle including exercise, stretches, diet/nutrition etc. After the resolution of the chief complaint for which they are being treated is resolved, the patient chooses to return to prevent recurrence and/or for maintenance of general mobility and well-being.

3. Only old people need to see a chiropractor – chiropractic care is great for all ages. I treat patients as young as 4 and as old as 90. People of all ages have specific needs and conditions that need to be treated and managed conservatively and effectively.

4. Chiropractors only treat back pain – this could not be further from the truth. Chiropractors are trained to diagnose, treat and manage a large variety of conditions pertaining to the musculoskeletal system. Although they may not be able to treat other systems of the body due to regulated scopes of practice, chiropractors are highly trained in full physical exams and may screen for other health issues in an assessment, and refer you to your family physician or specialists for treatment. It is important that we all take care of out bodies, inside and out. Proper functioning can lead to a more active and enjoyable life. Whether you are being treated by a chiropractic doctor, physiotherapist, massage therapist, osteopath, or medical doctor, it is important that you get the best care with the least adverse affects to keep you motoring on.

I hope I was able to dispel some chiropractic myths. If you have any questions or need clarification, feel free to contact me.

Yours in health,
