How Acupuncture works – The 6 Effects of Acupuncture

There are 6 objective and physiological effects of acupuncture:
1. Analgesic (pain-relieving) – the best known effect and is caused by raising the pain threshold to treat pain disorders such as back pain, toothaches, arthritis etc.

2. Sedation – caused by a decrease in delta and theta wave activity as shown by electro-encephalograms . Used to treat insomnia, anxiety, epilepsy, addictions, mental disorders and behavioural problems

3. Homeostatic / Regulatory effect – normalizing and restoring the original state of equilibrium in the parasympathetic (rest and digest) and sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous systems. Effective in treating high/low blood pressure, diarrhea/constipation, and other systemic imbalances.

4. Immune-enhancing effects – increases white corpuscles, antibodies, gamma-globulins and other substances which increase the bodies resistance.

5. Psychological effects – calming and tranquilizing effects apart from sedation caused by action on the mid-brain’s reticular formation. Measuerd inreases in dopamine content after acupuncture may account for effectiveness in brain disorders such as Parkinson’s disease (depletion of brain dopamine levels).

6. Motor recovery – hastens recovery of patients with paralysis from numerous causes even with late treatment. This is caused by antidromic stimulation of the anterior horn cells and their reactivation through a bio-feedback mechanism via various spinal cord cells and their cranial equivalents.
